About Sheelagh

Professor Sheelagh McCracken serves as Professor of Finance Law at the University of Sydney Law School. A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, she holds an MA from the University of Cambridge, a PhD from the University of Sydney obtained in 1991, and a Certificate in Higher Education from the University of New South Wales. Her academic career has been centered at the University of Sydney, where she has taught finance law across various programs. McCracken has been recognized among Australia's Best Lawyers in the area of Banking and Finance Law in the 2019 and 2022 editions.

McCracken's research interests lie in finance law and commercial law, particularly secured transactions under the Personal Property Securities Act 2009 (Cth). She is the author of the authoritative text The Banker's Remedy of Set-Off, first published in 1993 and now in its fourth edition (Bloomsbury, 2024), which examines the banker's equitable right of set-off in depth. She co-authored the tenth edition of Everett and McCracken's Banking and Financial Institutions Law, a standard reference in banking regulation and financial institutions. Additionally, she edited Making Banking and Finance Law: A Snapshot, compiling working papers from the Ross Parsons Centre of Commercial, Corporate and Taxation Law. Her publications include the chapter 'Central Banking in Australia and New Zealand: Historical Foundations and Modern Legislative Frameworks' (2018) and contributions on security rights in intellectual property in Australia. McCracken participates in the University of Sydney Law School's Centre for Asian and Pacific Law and the Commercial, Corporate and Tax research theme. She serves as an expert for UNIDROIT working groups on topics including digital assets and private law, model law on leasing, and the legal nature of verified carbon credits, contributing to international legal harmonization in finance and commercial law.
