Shauna Thompson serves as Professor of Flute, Division Chair of Woodwinds, and Coordinator of Graduate Programs in the School of Music at Texas Christian University. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and her Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University. Before joining the TCU faculty, Dr. Thompson held the position of Consortium Instructor of Flute at the University of Evansville.
As an accomplished performer, Dr. Thompson has performed as principal flute with the Lubbock Symphony and as second flute with the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Her notable concerto appearances include Chaminade's Concertino with the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of Martin Blessinger’s Rhapsody for Flute and Orchestra with the Texas Christian University Symphony Orchestra, and Frank Ticheli’s Silver Linings with the Sugar Land Winds. She has been featured as a performer at multiple National Flute Association conventions and as a guest artist at conventions of the Texas Flute Society in Kingsville, Waco, and Weatherford.
Dr. Thompson's accolades include winning the 26th annual Myrna Brown competition presented by the Texas Flute Society, as well as being a prizewinner in competitions sponsored by the National Flute Association, Pittsburgh Flute Club, Claude Monteaux, Frank Bowen, Mid-South Flute Society, and MTNA. Her discography features the solo album Reflections, duo and trio recordings with Laurel Zucker and Julee Kim Walker, and a duo album with her former student Mehrdad Gholami. In addition to her teaching and performing, she holds the role of Competition Coordinator for the National Flute Association and has previously coordinated the NFA's Professional Flute Choir Competition and the Texas Flute Society’s Donna Marie Haire competition.
At TCU, Dr. Thompson leads the Flute Studio, where students participate in flute choir performances of classical, contemporary, and original works throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The studio emphasizes skills in intonation, rhythm, sight-reading, expression, sound production, and chamber music, preparing students for careers as performers and educators. The annual TCU Flute Festival offers masterclasses, workshops, solo evaluations, and exhibits, fostering professional development.
