About Seth

Seth Lunine is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. A native of the East Bay, his academic interests are deeply rooted in the historical roots of urban transformations in California. He holds a B.A. in Geography from UC Berkeley, an M.A. from California State University, Northridge, and a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley, completed in 2013. His doctoral dissertation, titled Iron, Oil, and Emeryville: Resource Industrialization and Metropolitan Expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1850-1900, examines the role of industrialization in fostering regional capitalism and metropolitan growth through the lenses of urban and economic geography.

Lunine's research specializations encompass cities and suburbs, race and ethnicity, economic geography, and landscape studies, with a particular emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and the American West. He is currently developing a book manuscript entitled Sin Suburb: Manufacturing Vice in Emeryville and the San Francisco Bay Area, which investigates urban politics, commercial entertainment, and popular culture. His ongoing projects delve into the early high explosives sector and the contributions of specialized Bay Area corporations to California's and the United States' economic expansion in the late 19th century. As an active participant in the American Cultures Engaged Scholarship (ACES) Program, Lunine explores issues of power, race, and class in contemporary cities. In his teaching, he leads courses including Geography 50AC: California, Geography 70AC: The Urban Experience: Race, Class, and the American City, Geography 72AC: The Bay Area, Geography 181: Urban Field Study, and Geography 182: Field Study of Buildings and Cities. His community-engaged approach fosters student partnerships with local organizations to tackle gentrification, displacement, homelessness, and housing insecurity, producing resource guides, infographics, and organizing materials. Lunine's innovative pedagogy has garnered the Chancellor’s Award for Community-Engaged Teaching for the 2024-2025 academic year and the 2020 American Cultures Excellence in Teaching Award, underscoring his impact on geography education and community scholarship.
