About Sebastien

Dr. Sébastien Darchen is a Senior Lecturer in Planning and Director of Higher Degree by Research in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Queensland. He holds a PhD in Urban Studies from Institut de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS-Urbanisation), Université du Québec à Montréal, obtained in 2008. His earlier qualifications include a Bachelor of Urban Planning and a Masters from Université Paris VIII, a Postgraduate Diploma from Paris West University Nanterre La Défense, and a Masters from the University of Cape Town. Darchen's research centers on the political economy of the built environment, examining strategies employed by urban stakeholders such as developers, city planners, and urban designers, particularly in urban regeneration contexts. He explores cultural planning, place-making, land-use planning, creative industries, globalization, cultural history of cities, urban and regional planning, history of music scenes, and culture and cities. His work spans urban regeneration experiences in France, Canada, the US, and Australia.

Darchen has an extensive publication record, including 41 journal articles, many in leading outlets such as Urban Studies, Cities, and European Planning Studies; 24 book chapters; three edited books with Palgrave Macmillan and Routledge on urban sustainability, electronic music policies, and underground music cultures in Los Angeles; and other outputs like books and conference papers. Notable recent works include the edited volume Underground Music Cultures and Music-Making in Los Angeles: Imaginary Cities (2025), the monograph The Gun Club: L’épopée Musicale de Jeffrey Lee Pierce (2024), and articles such as Spatial Impacts of Melbourne's ‘Agent of Change’ Principle and Brisbane's ‘Designated Entertainment Precinct’ Policy (City, Culture and Society, 2025) and Emergence and Fall of the Hollywood Punk Scene in Los Angeles (City, Culture and Society, 2025). He has secured research funding, including from the ARC Training Centre for Climate-Resilient Water (2025-2030) and a UQ New Staff Research Start-Up Fund (2011-2012). Darchen supervises PhD and MPhil students, teaches planning courses, and recently joined the editorial board of City, Culture and Society as Associate Editor.
