Associate Professor Sebastian Lippross serves as Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Senior Medical Officer (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care (Dunedin), Section of Orthopaedic Surgery, at the University of Otago. He holds an MD from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) and a specialist qualification in Orthopaedics from the Ärztekammer Schleswig-Holstein (Germany). His expertise is in orthopaedic surgery, where he contributes to both clinical practice and academic research within the Division of Health Sciences.
Lippross's research focuses on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in orthopaedics and trauma surgery. Notable areas include autocalibration for 3D ultrasound reconstruction in infant hip dysplasia screening, the impact of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on osteoblast function through Nrf2/ARE and NFκB pathways in spheroid cultures, management of severe soft tissue injuries in multiple trauma patients via matched-pair analysis from the TraumaRegister DGU®, predictors of prolonged hospital stays for pelvic ring and acetabular fractures in a level 1 trauma center over a 10-year period, and development of planned and monitored robotic assistance for orthopaedics and trauma surgery. His recent publications include "Autocalibration for 3D Ultrasound Reconstruction in Infant Hip Dysplasia Screening" (2025), "Possible association of Nrf2/ARE and NFκB response to osteoblast function in spheroid culture induced by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound" (2025), "Severe soft tissue injuries in multiple trauma patients: A challenge we can meet? A matched-pair analysis from the TraumaRegister DGU®" (2025), "Predictors of prolonged hospital stay of pelvic ring and acetabular fractures: A retrospective analysis in a 10-year period of a level 1 trauma center" (2025), and "Entwicklung einer geplanten und überwachenden Roboterassistenz und-automation für den Einsatz in der Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie" (2023). He supervises orthopaedic surgical research projects and summer research scholarships at the University of Otago.
