Dr. Scott Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Wellness at Tennessee Technological University, a position he has held since August 2020. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Sport Management (2001) and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership (2002) from the University of Missouri-Columbia, an M.Ed. in Physical Education from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (1988), and a B.S. in Biological Education from Bluffton College (1978). Prior to joining Tennessee Tech, Smith enjoyed a distinguished career in athletic administration and higher education. He served as Assistant Professor of Instruction and Program Director for the Master of Athletic Administration at Ohio University from 2015 to 2020. At Central Michigan University, he progressed from Assistant Professor in 2003 to Full Professor and Department Chair by 2014, retiring as Professor Emeritus. Earlier roles encompassed district athletic director positions in Wichita Public Schools (1994-1999), Dayton City Schools (1999-2000), and Greenville City Schools (2001-2003), along with various administrative roles in K-12 education starting from 1978 as a science teacher and coach.
Smith's research focuses on interscholastic athletic programs and administrators, sport fundraising and marketing, sport facilities management and development, and sport finance. He is a prolific contributor to the field, with publications including "Fundraising tips for the interscholastic athletic administrator: A baker’s dozen" (Interscholastic Athletic Administration, 2019), "Community of Inquiry in online education" (Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education, 2019), and "Servant leadership in interscholastic sport" (2018). Additionally, he has authored chapters such as "Designing sport management internships" (2010) and developed NIAAA Leadership Training Courses on topics like ethical decision-making in sports (2021), proper fitting of athletic equipment (2012), and marketing strategies (2009). A Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) and Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) by the NIAAA, Smith currently serves as Curriculum Coordinator and University Liaison for their Leadership Training Program. His professional affiliations include lifetime membership in the NIAAA and AAHPERD, and current membership in the North American Society for Sport Management.
