Scott Rhodes is the Operations Manager and Head of Biomedical Research Facilities at the University of Otago's Division of Health Sciences. In this capacity, he oversees a team of dedicated animal care technicians, specialised technologists, and technical support staff. The facilities manage the holding and supply of laboratory animals and large animals for biomedical research projects. They deliver technical support, training, and specialised expertise to research units and departments throughout the University's campuses in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. The Biomedical Research Facilities are approved by the Ministry of Primary Industries and function as a New Zealand Government Transitional Containment and Quarantine Facility, maintaining stringent standards for animal welfare and biosafety in research environments.
Scott Rhodes has demonstrated leadership in advancing transparency in animal research and teaching practices. He received the inaugural Openness in Animal Research and Teaching Award from the University of Otago in 2025 as Head of Biomedical Research Facilities. This accolade recognises his proactive initiatives, including organising tours of the Biomedical Research Facility for the whānau of staff, senior students from Dunedin high schools, veterinary nursing students (tauira), and groups from professional and academic sectors. These efforts have effectively communicated the high standards of animal care and addressed public perceptions regarding the conduct of animal-based research at the University. Rhodes has contributed to the field by presenting on topics such as animal facility management at conferences, including the ANZCCART event on 'Animal facilities – how do we manage?'. His work bolsters the Research Infrastructure Centre's mission to support cutting-edge biomedical research while prioritising ethical practices and openness.
