Dr. Scott Fortey serves as Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle. He earned his MBBS from the University of Sydney in 1987 and holds Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA). His career began with roles as Resident Medical Officer (RMO) and Registrar on the Central Coast, followed by specialist anaesthesia training in the United Kingdom and multiple Sydney hospitals. Since 1998, he has practiced as a consultant anaesthetist at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals within the Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD), where he provides clinical leadership as District Clinical Director and has previously headed the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management.
For 15 years, Fortey held the position of District Prevocational Education and Training (DPET) Director at CCLHD, establishing key programs to enhance mentoring, education, and support for junior medical staff. He is a passionate advocate for patient safety, improving clinical outcomes, and supporting staff wellbeing. At the national level, he chairs the ANZCA Educators Sub-committee, having previously chaired the Scholar Role Sub-committee, and serves on the ANZCA NSW Regional Committee and the NSW Anaesthesia ACI Perioperative Care Network, contributing expertise to anaesthesia training, service, and strategic initiatives. In 2021, he received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medicine as an anaesthetist. Fortey has contributed to academic literature, including co-authoring 'Management of the patient presenting for emergency laparotomy' in BJA Education (2019). His interests include medical education, quality improvement, and research initiation for new centres. Beyond his professional duties, he volunteers with Interplast, providing anaesthesia to patients requiring burns treatment or cleft lip/palate repairs in the Asia-Pacific region.
