A master at fostering understanding.
Brings enthusiasm to every interaction.
Scott Annin is a professor of mathematics at California State University, Fullerton, having joined the faculty in 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. Annin has taught approximately 20 different mathematics courses, including linear algebra, differential equations, and complex analysis. He is celebrated for his teaching philosophy that emphasizes educating one student, one concept, and one moment at a time, fostering 'aha moments' and guiding students through mathematical challenges akin to mountaineering journeys. Annin has advised the Math Club, coached students for mathematical competitions, prepared them to present at conferences, and co-chaired the largest undergraduate research conference on campus in fall 2014. He coordinates Math 250B and has served as vice chair of the department. Additionally, he co-directs a $600,000 National Science Foundation grant project supporting disadvantaged students aspiring to graduate degrees in mathematics.
Annin's research specializes in pure mathematics, including noncommutative ring theory, algebra, and analysis. His publications include 'Attached Primes Under Skew Polynomial Extensions' and 'On kth Roots in the Symmetric Inverse Monoid.' He co-authored the top-selling textbook 'Differential Equations and Linear Algebra' with Stephen Goode and 'A Gentle Introduction to the American Invitational Mathematics Exam' in 2015. His contributions have earned him major awards: the 2015 Outstanding Professor Award at CSUF, the 2009 Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America, the 2008 Carol Barnes Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2012 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Success, and the 2015 Distinguished Faculty Member for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Annin's mentorship has propelled many students to advanced degrees and careers as mathematics educators, amplifying his influence in the field. He has also delivered public lectures, such as 'Mathematics and Mountaintops' to the Mathematical Association of America.
