Great Professor!
Saw Hoon Lim is an Associate Professor and Teaching Specialist in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Melbourne, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She obtained her PhD from the University of Cambridge, training as a plant molecular biologist with research focused on rate-limiting steps in the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway and flower pigmentation in orchids. Prior to her current appointment, she worked as an academic at Monash University, teaching large cohorts of biology and biomedical science students, which facilitated her transition into the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Saw Hoon Lim's academic interests center on enhancing student learning experiences in biomedical sciences, particularly biochemistry and molecular biology. She develops skills for individual and group work, introduces cooperative learning approaches, maximizes social inclusiveness in large classes via backchanneling methods, investigates role-playing for addressing biomedical controversies, examines teacher personality traits for effective teaching in higher education, and explores online approaches to improve student learning methods and reflective practice. Her contributions earned a team award for exceptional service to the Faculty of Science at Monash University in 2016 and a special commendation mention in the Vice-Chancellor's Education Awards (team award category) that year.
Key publications include "Undergraduate science students’ attitudes toward and approaches to scientific reading and writing" (The Journal of College Science Teaching, 45(4):83-89, 2016, with H. Verkade) and "Uptake of optional activities leads to improved performance in a biomedical sciences class" (Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 15(6):48-62, 2015, with H. Verkade). She co-authored posters presented at the VIBEnet conference in 2013: "Enhancing Student Preparedness and Understanding in First Year Biology Practicals in a Click" and "A First Year Biology Poster Project – the Poster Child for Promoting Teamwork, Research and Science Communication Skills."
