About Sandra

Dr Sandra Rennie serves as Senior Lecturer in the UWA Medical School within the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia. In this capacity, she acts as Medical Coordinator for the Busselton Rural Clinical School, facilitating medical student training and education in a rural setting. She is also an Emergency Consultant at Bunbury and Busselton Hospitals, providing specialized care in emergency medicine. Furthermore, Dr Rennie holds the position of Visiting Lecturer at Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea, contributing to international medical education. Her research interests center on Clinical Reasoning, essential for effective medical practice.

Dr Rennie possesses qualifications of MBChB, BSc, and FACEM (Fellow of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine). She has demonstrated substantial commitment to advancing emergency medicine in resource-limited environments through her volunteer efforts in developing and delivering the Advanced Diploma in Emergency Medicine at Divine Word University, Madang, Papua New Guinea. This two-year program, delivered via the faculties of Health Science and Flexible Learning, targets nurses, health extension officers, and doctors to enhance collaboration across PNG's healthcare sectors. It features four intensive one-week residential units that she helped create and teach: Unit 1 on Trauma (June 2006), emphasizing systematic assessment and treatment using the Primary Trauma Care Course with minimal resources, injury prevention, and disaster planning; Unit 2 on Paediatric Emergencies (November 2006), based on the WHO Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment course, covering ABCD approaches, IMCI steps, management of asthma, snakebites, and resuscitation; Unit 3 on Medical Emergencies (June 2007), focusing on systematic management of acutely ill adults through lectures, workshops, and simulations; and Unit 4 on Obstetrics and Gynaecological Emergencies (October 2007), addressing anticipation, assessment, and management including transfer protocols. The inaugural five graduates were awarded diplomas in March 2008 amid 700 students, with subsequent cohorts of 20 students enrolling, often employer-sponsored, and alumni now facilitating courses. International contributors experienced in developing countries are encouraged to participate. Dr Rennie has co-authored publications, including the 2020 paper 'Conservative versus Interventional Treatment for Hemodynamically Stable Patients With Intermediate-Risk or High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism: Results From the Multinational PEITHO-2 Registry' in JAMA Cardiology. She has served as a member on various WA Country Health Service committees.
