Sandra Navarro is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Chair of Arts and Humanities at Western New England University in the College of Arts and Sciences, a position she has held since July 2020, following her promotion to Associate Professor in September 2019. She joined the faculty in September 2013. Navarro holds a PhD in Spanish from Emory University (2013), an MA in Spanish from Emory University (2010), an MA in Spanish and Latin American Studies from the University of Alberta (2006), and a BA in Latin American Studies with a Philosophy minor from the University of Alberta (2004). Her research centers on Spanish and Latinx literature, film, and culture, with specializations in childhood studies, film theory, and the intersections of race and gender. She is currently completing a manuscript on the representation of children in contemporary Argentine film. Her research interests include Latin American Cultural Studies, Hispanic Film, Latin American Literature, and Childhood Studies.
Navarro's publications include the chapter "De Vientres y Aguas: Women and Landscape in El Niño Pez and El Verano de los Peces Voladores" in Crisis y transformaciones: Cinematic Landscape and Emerging Identities in Contemporary Latin American Film (Lexington Books, 2024); "Espacios inhóspitos: clase, género, y encierro en La nana (2009) de Sebastián Silva" in Inusuales: hogar, sexualidad y política en el cine hispano (Iberoamericana Vervuert, 2020); and the article "The Silent Other: The Latino Figure in No Country for Old Men and Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" in Latino Studies (2017). Additional works feature an encyclopedia entry "Retrato de Teresa" in A Cuban Cinema Companion (Rowman and Littlefield, 2020) and a review in Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas (2016). She has presented extensively at conferences such as the Latin American Studies Association and Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Awards include the Western New England University Faculty Summer Research Grant (2016-2017), Dean’s Teaching Fellowship from Laney Graduate School (2012-2013), and several research grants from Emory University. Navarro serves in leadership roles, including Chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Online Pedagogy Committee (2020-2021) and Faculty Representative on the Senate Diversity Committee (2018-present).
