Professor San San Hlaing is the Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology at the University of Medicine, Mandalay. She advanced further with her 2007 Ph.D. thesis, "Cell cycle related protein cyclin D1 expression in soft tissue sarcomas," investigating the expression of cyclin D1 as a cell cycle-related protein in soft tissue tumors. Professor Hlaing has co-authored works presented at professional conferences, including "Mean Platelet Volume in Neonatal Septicemia" with Nay Myo Wai and Ye Thu Win, analyzing hematological indicators in neonatal infections. She has also been involved in studies on serum ferritin and lactate dehydrogenase levels in carcinoma breast patients conducted in association with the Department of Pathology at Mandalay General Hospital. Beyond research, she participated in JICA projects aimed at improving pathology training materials at the University of Medicine, Mandalay. Additionally, she served on the core group for developing the Gastrointestinal, Liver & Nutrition Module Learner's Guide. In 2026, Professor Hlaing chaired paper reading sessions at the 13th Myanmar Pathology Society Conference, highlighting her active role in the national pathology community.
