Samantha Dix is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Simulation in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Monash University, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She joined Monash University Nursing and Midwifery in 2017 with an extensive background in emergency nursing, most recently serving as a clinical nurse educator in a busy metropolitan emergency department. Her appointment as the first Director of Simulation in Australia positions Monash as a pioneering leader in simulation-based education. Dix holds a Doctorate by Research from the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Monash University, a Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education from Monash University (2014), a Master of Nursing (Emergency Care) from La Trobe University (2010), a Bachelor of Nursing (Post-registration) from Queensland University of Technology (1996), and a Diploma of Applied Science (Nursing) from Monash University (1990). Prior to academia, she demonstrated research activity from 2007, contributing to simulation-based education across health services and educational settings.
Dix's research specializations center on simulation-based education pedagogy in nursing and health professions education, focusing on bridging the learning gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice to develop healthcare professionals capable of providing high-quality patient care. She has high expertise in applying key simulation concepts to teaching, learning, and research, including student-led simulation, simulation for assessment, and enhancing clinical placements. Currently, as a PhD candidate, her project titled 'The interplay between emotions and learning during health professions simulation based education' explores emotions experienced by healthcare professionals and students during simulation, supervised by Associate Professors Gabrielle Brand and Julia Morphet. Key publications include contributions to reports such as 'Review of Enrolled Nurse Standards for practice: Deliverable 6: Final Report' (Monash University, October 2025), 'Review of Enrolled Nurse standards for practice Deliverable 4: Stage 3 Delphi stakeholder consultation: Report' (May 2025), and 'Review of Registered Nurse standards for practice: Deliverable 4: Stage Three – Delphi survey' (May 2025), as well as the conference poster 'Partnering with consumers to co-design simulation-based learning that addresses cognitive bias in healthcare' (2025). She has earned awards including a Best Full Paper nomination (March 2024) for AI-powered learning analytics in teamwork, a prize for midwifery and medical students’ simulation of postpartum haemorrhage management (June 2017), and MNM Writing Retreat selections (2019, 2022). As lead and team member, she has supported successful funding and publications in simulation-based health professions education.
