About Sam

Sam Ellis, PharmD, BCPS, CDE, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences on the Anschutz Medical Campus. He serves as Director of the CU Research Pharmacy, Diabetes Management. His academic background includes a Post-Baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy jointly awarded by Oregon State University and Oregon Health & Science University in 1997, a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon in 1995, and a Post-Doctorate Fellowship in Ambulatory Care at the University of Colorado Denver in 2000. Ellis practices at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, which provides care for over 2000 patients and is renowned for its clinical research programs, and at the University Endocrine Division, which utilizes a team-based clinic model for diabetes management supported by comprehensive training and education initiatives.

Ellis's research specializations include experimental and clinical therapeutics, the implementation of technology in diabetes management, pharmaceutical care outcomes in diabetes, and the effects of mental health treatments on diabetes patients. Notable publications include "Improvement in glycemic excursions with a transcutaneous, real-time continuous glucose sensor: a randomized controlled trial" in Diabetes Care (2006), "GLP-1 receptor agonists: a review of head-to-head clinical studies" in Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism (2015), "Obesity, insulin resistance, and type 1 diabetes mellitus" in Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity (2015), and "Effect of sitagliptin on glucose control in adult patients with Type 1 diabetes: a pilot, double-blind, randomized, crossover trial" in Diabetic Medicine (2011). In 2023, he was honored with a 25 Years of Service award by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Ellis contributes to the field through leadership roles, including service on the Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association-Colorado Chapter, the diabetes self-management education task force of the Colorado Department of Public Health, the CCGC committee that developed the Colorado Diabetes Guidelines, and as Chair of the Endocrine & Metabolism Practice and Research Network of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy from 2006 to 2007. As Director of the CU Research Pharmacy, he supports innovative clinical research across the campus to advance therapeutic agents for human health.
