Sabine Huemer serves as Professor of Practice in the School of Psychological Science at Oregon State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, an M.A. in Psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, and completed her undergraduate studies at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna in Austria. Her primary academic interests lie in Environmental Psychology, where she investigates how our surroundings, particularly natural environments, can be designed and utilized to promote wellbeing and optimal performance. This focus builds on her prior research in autism and dyslexia, emphasizing modifiable environments to support human functioning. She explores the health benefits of nature, the advantages of heightened environmental awareness, and methods to translate awareness into pro-environmental actions.
Throughout her career, Huemer has held various academic appointments, including positions from 2021 to 2023 at Paris-Lodron University and the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg, Austria, as well as at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Pitzer College in Claremont, Whittier College in Whittier, and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, in addition to teaching at several community colleges in the Los Angeles area. Her teaching portfolio is extensive, encompassing courses such as Nature Connectedness and Environmental Consciousness, Forest Wood Health, Forest and Wood Architecture, Research Methods, Social and Personality Development, Cognition, General Psychology, Critical Thinking in Psychology, Ethics and the Brain, Neuroethics, Neurodiversity, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Brain and Behavior, and Statistics. In service to her institutions and communities, she has organized mindful nature walks for students and faculty, hosted campus-to-community awareness events, founded an interdisciplinary learning community, participated in STEM labs and fairs at local elementary schools, delivered public talks and workshops, developed engaged learning programs, conducted faculty workshops on the inclusive classroom, and served on the Provost's Diversity Council. Huemer has presented her work at over 30 international conferences across three continents.
