S. Kent Butler, Ph.D., serves as a Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Counselor Education and School Psychology within the University of Central Florida's College of Community Innovation and Education. In the field of Education, he earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, with a concentration in Counseling Psychology, from the University of Connecticut. A Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and Nationally Certified School Counselor (NCSC), Dr. Butler has advanced through various roles at UCF, including Interim Chief Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Officer and Faculty Fellow for Inclusive Excellence in the Office of the Provost. His national leadership includes serving as President of the American Counseling Association from 2021 to 2022, earning designation as an ACA Fellow, and previously as President of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development from 2011 to 2012. Additionally, he was selected as a Fellow in the National Association of Chief Diversity Officers in Higher Education’s program for 2020-2021.
Dr. Butler's academic interests focus on multicultural and international counseling, social justice advocacy, mentoring programs, counseling interventions for African American males, group counseling, school counseling, and multicultural supervision. He spearheaded the High-Risk Delinquent and Dependent Child Educational Research Project as Principal Investigator, fostering a partnership among Florida universities that led to the UCF Young Knights Mentoring Project at Hungerford Elementary School in Eatonville, Florida. As faculty advisor, he guides Chi Sigma Iota International Honor Society, the Counselor Education Doctoral Student Organization, Project for Haiti Knights, and the NAACP chapter. Dr. Butler contributed to the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development’s committee revising the Multicultural Counseling Competencies into the Multicultural Social Justice Counseling Competencies. His accolades encompass the UCF College of Education and Human Performance Teaching Incentive Program Award in 2016, the ACA Fellow Award in 2016, the Kitty Cole Human Rights Award from AMCD in 2013, and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Connecticut’s Center for Academic Programs in 2012. Notable publications include "Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies: Guidelines for the Counseling Profession" (2016), "Mentoring African American Men During Their Postsecondary and Graduate School Experiences: Implications for the Counseling Profession" (2013), and "Wellness of Minority Female Counselor Educators" (2013).
