Ryan Thorpe is an Associate Teaching Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Global College, within the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, where he specializes in teaching English language, literature, creative writing, theater, and technical communications. He serves as the Director of the Global College Writing Center and Discipline Group Head for Academic Writing. Thorpe earned his Ph.D. in English with dual emphases in Creative Writing and TESOL from Oklahoma State University in 2014. He holds an M.A. in English: Creative Writing from Texas Tech University (2009) and dual B.A. degrees in English and Theater from Trinity University (2006). His academic career at SJTU began in 2014 as a Lecturer of English at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, advancing to Assistant Teaching Professor in 2018 and then to his current Associate Teaching Professor position. Prior roles include Visiting Professor and Professor at the Center for English Excellence of Gifted Youth at Kyungpook National University (2013-2014), Theater Instructor at Duke University's Talent Identification Program (2011-2013), Graduate Instructor at Oklahoma State University (2010-2013), Assistant Professor of English Education at Daegu University (2009-2010), and Graduate Instructor at Texas Tech University (2007-2009).
Thorpe has received several honors, including the Excellence in Teaching award from Texas Tech University, a Letter of Accommodation from the Dean of Students at Texas Tech University, the SJTU Candlelight Award for outstanding young faculty, and recognition as an Outstanding Lecturer in the SJTU Lecturing Competition. Over the past five years, he has taught courses such as Introduction to Argumentation, Introduction to Research Writing, Technical Communications, Creative Non-fiction, Introduction to Creative Writing, The Literature of Love, Introduction to Theater, and Graduate Technical Communications at UM-SJTU JI, as well as Literature, Theater, and Creative Writing at CEEGY and English Conversation and Writing and Professional Writing at Kyungpook National University. His synergistic activities include serving as editor of the Blue Tiger, Assistant Director of the JI Writing Program, Submissions Editor for The Iron Horses (2007-2009), consultant for the Rockbund Art Museum, Poetry Editor at the Shanghai Literary Review, and founder and leader of the Shanghai Writing Workshop. These contributions enhance writing education and literary activities within the academic community.
