About Russell

Russell Lansbury is Emeritus Professor of Industrial Relations in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney Business School. He holds an MA from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the London School of Economics, as well as honorary doctorates from Macquarie University and Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. His career commenced with work at British Airways in the United Kingdom, followed by a position as Senior Lecturer at Monash University. He then became Associate Professor and Director of Labour-Management Studies at the Graduate School of Management, Macquarie University. Appointed Professor of Industrial Relations at the University of Sydney in 1987, he served in this role until 2009. Throughout his tenure, Lansbury was Head of Department, Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Economics and Business, and Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Industrial Relations Research and Training (ACIRRT), an Australian Research Council Key Centre. He maintains Adjunct Professor appointments at RMIT University and the Open University of Hong Kong.

Lansbury specialises in industrial relations, employment relations, work and organisational studies, with particular emphasis on policy, globalisation, trade unionism, and comparative employment relations. Key publications include the book Crossing Boundaries: Work and Industrial Relations in Perspective (2022), International and Comparative Employment Relations: National Regulation, Global Changes (2015), 'Workplace reform: a new social contract for Australia' (2021), 'Defining the problem of low wage growth in Australia and Denmark: From the actors’ perspectives' (2022), 'The Ghent system of social insurance: a model for Australia?' (2021), and 'Who Killed the Australian Automotive Industry: The Employers, Government or Trade Unions?' (2020). He was Joint Editor of the Journal of Industrial Relations from 1999 to 2009. Lansbury has received the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his service to industrial relations. His scholarly output comprises 247 publications with substantial citations, contributing significantly to understandings of workplace dynamics, automotive industry decline, wage growth challenges, and retirement patterns through ongoing collaborations.
