Rupert Rhodd, Ph.D., serves as Associate Dean for Broward Campuses and Associate Professor in the Economics Department at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business, within the Business & Economics faculty. A Jamaican by birth, he joined FAU in 1989 as an Assistant Professor in the College of Social Science, becoming the longest-serving Broward faculty member. His career trajectory includes Chair of the Division of Social Sciences and Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts (1992-1996), Associate Professor in Economics since 1996, and Associate Dean in the College of Business since 2011. Rhodd earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Fordham University (1990), M.A. in Economics from Fordham (1983), B.S. in Economics (Honors) from the University of the West Indies (1974), and certification in Public Policy: Social, Economic, and Foreign Policies from Harvard University.
Dr. Rhodd’s areas of expertise are international economics, development economics, and macroeconomics, with research interests in international economic development, international monetary economics, Caribbean and Latin American economics, applied macroeconomics, economic modeling, and urban and regional economic development. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of International Development, Journal of Policy Modeling, Atlantic Economic Journal, Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Journal of Third World Studies, Southern Economic Journal, Applied Economics, and Journal of Economics and Finance Education. Notable publications include the book “Issues in the Development of Contemporary Caribbean Economies” (2007, co-authored with Donna Cooke and Sandra Schrouder), “Strategies for Spatial and Economic Development” (2018), “Review and Comments on Accrual Accounting Valuation Models” (2018, with Min Liu), “Sovereign Risk and Dollarization: The Case of Ecuador” (2008, with Jules Pierre), “The Informal Economy in Jamaica: Is It Feasible to Tax this Sector?” (2012, with Chantal Wedderburn and Eric Chiang), and contributions to public procurement pricing strategies (2008, 2015, 2017). He teaches courses such as Money and Banking, International Monetary Economics, Economic Development, Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Advanced Macroeconomics, and has led study abroad programs for over 20 years to Costa Rica, Jamaica, Argentina, Paraguay, and Panama. Rhodd has received awards for community service: University of the West Indies Alumni Association Leadership Award, Jamaican Consulate’s Luminary Award, Caribbean American Heritage Award for Contribution to Education and Community Development, Wolmer’s Alumni Award, and Galleon Foundation Distinguished Service Award.
