Professor Emeritus Dr. Rosnah binti Mohd Zain is Professor of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at MAHSA University, where she also serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise. She was Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry from December 2016 to April 2023. Holding a Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) from the University of Queensland, Australia (1977), a Master of Science (MSc) in Oral Pathology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA (1982), and a Fellowship from the American Academy of Oral Pathology (1982), she has over four decades of distinguished academic service. At the University of Malaya, she progressed through roles such as Head of the Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, and Periodontology (2002-2004), Deputy Dean in various capacities, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (2010-2014), and Director of the Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre (OCRCC-UM) (2005-2015). She continues as Founding Director and Advisor to OCRCC-UM and holds an Honorary Professorship there.
Rosnah binti Mohd Zain's research specializes in oral cancer, precancerous lesions, oral mucosal lesions, epidemiology, biobanking, and early detection strategies. She spearheaded the nationwide epidemiological survey on oral mucosal lesions in Malaysia (1993-1994), the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database and Tumour Bank System (2003), and the establishment of OCRCC-UM (2005), fostering collaborative 'team science' in oral cancer research. Her OralDETECT training program standardizes oral lesion screening and is utilized in Malaysia and Cambodia. With more than 100 publications, notable works include "Oral lichen planus and lichenoid reactions: etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, management and malignant transformation" (2007, Journal of Oral Science), "Potentially malignant disorders of the oral cavity: current practice and future directions in the clinic and laboratory" (2015, International Journal of Cancer), and "A national epidemiological survey of oral mucosal lesions in Malaysia" (1997, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology). Her impactful contributions garnered the Top Research Scientist Malaysia Award (2014), Distinguished Fellow for Asia, International College of Dentists (2016), and numerous excellence awards. She has chaired accreditation committees, professional examinations, and serves as Advisor to the Asian Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology.
