Dr. Rory Jones is an Associate Professor in the School of the Built Environment at the University of Reading, appointed in 2023. He specializes in socio-technical studies of energy use, occupant behaviour, indoor environmental quality, and building performance, applying mathematical methods to analyse environmental and energy data. Previously, he served as a Lecturer at Plymouth University from 2014 to 2023, where he conducted extensive research on domestic energy consumption and low-energy housing. His work spans field studies in the UK, Europe, China, and West Africa, focusing on factors influencing electricity demand in urban households, social housing, and educational buildings.
Jones has authored numerous influential publications, including 'Determinants of high electrical energy demand in UK homes: appliance ownership and socio-economic and dwelling characteristics' (2015), 'The socio-economic, dwelling and appliance related factors affecting electricity consumption in domestic buildings' (2015), 'Operations on windows and external doors in UK primary schools and their effects on indoor environmental quality' (2022), 'A longitudinal assessment of the energy and carbon performance of a Passivhaus university building in the UK' (2021), and recent studies on electricity consumption and lifestyles in Burkina Faso (2023-2024) and biomimicry for sustainable construction (2024). His research has amassed over 1,900 citations, impacting sustainable building design, energy policy, and retrofit strategies. Jones has secured significant funding, including an ESRC grant in 2025 as lead for the School of the Built Environment and involvement in projects like the Non-Domestic Smarter Tariff Comparison Programme to reduce business energy costs. He co-convenes modules such as Building Environment Systems and Technology and Urban Energy Systems, contributing to education in energy engineering and sustainability.
