Rong-Ji Chen is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Education at California State University, San Marcos, contributing to the Education faculty's mission of preparing effective K-8 teachers. He earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a focus on mathematics, science, and technology education. At CSUSM, Dr. Chen teaches K-8 mathematics methods courses in the Multiple Subject Credential Program, Integrated Credential Program, and Middle Level Program. He also instructs an introductory educational technology course, equipping preservice teachers with skills to integrate technology into mathematics instruction effectively.
Dr. Chen's research interests include teachers' perceptions about the nature of mathematics and how they view themselves as learners of mathematics. His work further explores technology integration in mathematics education and teacher education, particularly through the lens of a critical theory of technology. Key publications encompass 'Investigating models for preservice teachers' use of technology to support student-centered learning' in Computers & Education (2010), 'Less is More' in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School (2011), and 'Preservice Mathematics Teachers' Ambiguous Views of Technology' in School Science and Mathematics (2011). As Program Director of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholars Program at CSUSM, Dr. Chen leads efforts to develop STEM educators committed to diverse communities. His contributions support the university's conceptual framework of engaging diverse communities through leading and learning for social justice.
