She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005, with support from National Science Foundation and Ford Foundation fellowships, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Rodriguez began her academic career as Assistant Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, where she earned tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor. At UC Davis, she advanced to Full Professor in Asian American Studies, serving as Chair—the first Filipina American to do so in the department's 50-year history—and as founding faculty director of the Bulosan Center for Filipinx Studies, the first center in the University of California system dedicated to the Filipinx experience in the United States. She also co-directs the UC Davis Labor and Community Center.
Her scholarship in social science focuses on globalization, immigration and migration, diaspora and transnationalism, citizenship, social movements, and activism, particularly the Philippine labor diaspora and comparative migration of Asians and Latinos. Notable publications include Migrants for Export: How the Philippine State Brokers Labor to the World (University of Minnesota Press, 2010), which received an honorable mention for best social science book from the Association for Asian American Studies; Asian America: Sociological and Interdisciplinary Perspectives (co-authored with Pawan Dhingra, Polity, 2014); Transnational Citizenship Across the Americas (co-edited with Ulla Berg, Routledge, 2014); In Lady Liberty’s Shadow: Race and Immigration in New Jersey (2017); and Filipino American Transnational Activism (2019). She has published over 30 articles and co-edits anthologies on Asian American activism (with Diane Fujino) and race, gender, and global labor migration (with Leticia Saucedo). Awards include the AAAS Excellence in Mentoring Award (2021) and the UC Davis Humanities Institute Public Engagement and Network-Collaboration Fellowship. Rodriguez has influenced the field through center leadership, public engagement, and activism in immigrant rights and anti-racism.
