Roberto Ventura serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Interior Design in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, aligning with the Arts and Culture discipline. Holding a Master of Architecture from Miami University and a Bachelor of Arts in Math-Physics from Albion College, he brings an interdisciplinary foundation blending analytical sciences with design. Ventura's career at VCU advanced from Assistant Professor to his current leadership role as Department Chair. In 2014, he designed the exhibition "Virginia’s Favorite Architecture" for AIA Virginia. He was awarded the Dean’s Distinguished Award in Teaching in 2015 for his contributions as Associate Professor in Interior Design. Ventura maintains a solo practice, roberto ventura design studio, integrating professional design experience into his academic work.
Ventura's academic and creative scholarship investigates intersections of multiple disciplines in form, type, process, and communication. This includes curation and design of exhibitions and introducing improv performance to design students to foster creativity. He values collaboration and interdisciplinarity, partnering with graphic designers and poets. Currently, he addresses diversity, inclusion, and equity in interior design, believing designers should lead change. As Chair, Ventura advises Master of Fine Arts theses in Interior Design on topics like trauma-informed housing, biophilic design, and community spaces, shaping innovative practices in the field.
