Professor Robert Walker is Professor Emeritus of Accounting in the Discipline of Accounting, Governance and Regulation at the University of Sydney Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales, Master of Economics and PhD from the University of Sydney, and is a qualified Chartered Accountant (ACA). Appointed Professor of Accounting at the University of Sydney in 1978, Walker has specialized in financial accounting, with a focus on consolidated financial statements, public sector financial reporting, disclosure regulation, and critiques of accounting practices in corporate and government contexts.
Walker's career includes significant advisory roles, such as foundation membership of the Accounting Standards Review Board, a 1983 review of company disclosure rules for the National Companies and Securities Commission, advice to the NSW Public Accounts Committee in 1984 on public sector disclosures, and chairmanship of the Council on the Cost of Government in 1995. His key publications encompass the book Consolidated Statements: A History and Analysis (1978, reprinted 2006), Abacus articles including 'Public Sector Consolidated Statements – An Assessment' (2009) and 'Issues in the Preparation of Public Sector Consolidated Statements' (2011), and a chapter on local government distress in Advances in Credit Risk Modelling and Corporate Bankruptcy Prediction (2008). Walker has influenced Australian accounting standards and public policy through expert commentary on financial reporting issues, government budgeting, and high-profile cases of creative accounting.
