Dr Robert Hall is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales Canberra. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland and a Doctor of Philosophy from UNSW. After serving in the Australian Regular Army, Hall joined UNSW Canberra in 1991 as the Executive Director of the Australian Defence Studies Centre at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Between 2006 and 2010, he held the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, during which he completed an Australian Research Council-funded project examining the combat effectiveness of Australian forces in the Vietnam War. Since 2010, as an Honorary Lecturer, he has focused on analyzing combat operations, developing the 'Australia's Vietnam War' website, and leading Operation Wandering Souls—a collaborative effort with Vietnam to locate burial sites of Vietnamese soldiers killed in action by Australian and New Zealand forces and to return recovered personal documents and artifacts.
Hall's academic interests center on Australian military history, with particular emphasis on the Vietnam War, counterinsurgency operations, and the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Second World War. His seminal publications include Fighters from the Fringe: Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders Recall the Second World War (Aboriginal Studies Press, 1995), The Black Diggers: Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders in the Second World War (Aboriginal Studies Press, 1997), Combat Battalion: The Eighth Battalion in Vietnam (Allen & Unwin, 2000), and, as co-author, The Search for Tactical Success in Vietnam: An Analysis of Australian Task Force Combat Operations (Cambridge University Press, 2015). Notable journal articles feature 'Shots per casualty: An indicator of combat efficiency for the first Australian Task Force in South Vietnam' (Defense and Security Analysis, 2018, with A. Ross), 'Kinetics in counterinsurgency: some influences on soldier combat performance in the 1st Australian Task Force in the Vietnam War' (Small Wars and Insurgencies, 2010, with A.T. Ross), and 'The political and military effectiveness of Commonwealth Forces in Confrontation 1963-66' (Small Wars and Insurgencies, 2008, with A. Ross). Through his extensive body of work, including book chapters and contributions to the 'Australia's Vietnam War' website, Hall has significantly influenced scholarship on tactical operations, soldier performance, and historical reconciliation in military contexts.
