Robert J. Tierney, known as Rob Tierney, is an Emeritus Professor and Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney, where he served as Dean and Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work from 2010 to 2013. He holds the position of Professor Emeritus of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia, Distinguished Professor at Beijing Normal University, and Conjoint Professor at the University of Newcastle's Wollotuka Centre. Tierney's academic qualifications include a Teaching Diploma from William Balmain Teachers College, BScEd from Jacksonville State University, MEd and PhD from the University of Georgia. His extensive career includes positions at Ohio State University as Professor and Director of the School of Teaching and Learning, University of Illinois, Harvard University, University of Arizona, and University of California-Berkeley. Earlier, he worked as a classroom teacher and demonstration teacher for the New South Wales Department of Education from 1967 to 1970.
Tierney's research focuses on literacy education, teacher development, cross-national educational research, educational assessment, equity, global epistemologies, digital literacy, meaning making, and indigenous developments. Notable publications include 'A History of Literacy Education: Waves of Research and Practice' (2021, co-authored with P.D. Pearson), 'Fact-checking the Science of Reading' (2024, co-authored with P.D. Pearson), 'Reading Strategies and Practices: A Compendium' (2005, 6th ed.), and articles such as 'Toward a Model of Global Meaning Making' (2018) and 'Global Literacies Research Diversity: A Manifesto for Change' (2021). He has received awards including induction into the Reading Hall of Fame (2000), W.S. Gray Citation of Merit (2003), Lifetime Membership in the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (2010), and Distinguished International Research Award from Beijing Normal University (2014). Tierney has led organizations as President of the Literacy Research Association and Association of Canadian Deans of Education, served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Encyclopedia of Education, and contributed to editorial boards of journals like Reading Research Quarterly and Journal of Literacy Research. His influence spans projects for UNESCO, the World Bank, and national initiatives in teacher education and research across Australia, Canada, China, and the US.
