Dr. Riko Stevens serves as a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle Campus, and holds the position of Adjunct Research Fellow in the Economics discipline of the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Western Australia in 2022, with a doctoral thesis entitled 'The Theory of Speculation in the Marshallian Tradition: Marshall, Pigou, Lavington, and Keynes on the Microeconomics of Speculation,' which earned the 2022 History of Economic Thought Society of Australia (HETSA) Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis. Earlier, Stevens completed a Master of Commerce with First Class Honours in Economics from the University of Auckland in 2017, focusing on 'The Theory of Speculation in the History of Economic Thought: The Contributions of Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, and Alfred Marshall Revisited'—a work awarded the HETSA Prize for Best Masters Thesis—and Bachelor of Commerce degrees with First Class Honours in Economics and in Economics and Finance, both in 2015 from the same institution.
Stevens specializes in the history of economic thought, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of economics and finance, including analyses of speculation within the Marshallian tradition. His key publications encompass 'The Theory of Speculation in the Marshallian Tradition: Marshall, Pigou, Lavington, and Keynes on the Microeconomics of Speculation' (History of Economics Review, 2023), 'The speculator and equilibrium: Pareto and Pigou' co-authored with Michael McLure (Revue Européenne des Sciences Sociales, 2023), and 'Australia’s Champion of Public Choice: An Appreciation of the Life and Works of Geoffrey Brennan' (History of Economics Review, 2024). Additionally, he contributed to 'More Than $1 Billion Needed Annually to Secure Africa’s Protected Areas with Lions' (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2018). Stevens is Treasurer of the Economic Society of Australia (WA Branch) since October 2022, a founding member of the UWA Economic and Business History Research Network and History and Philosophy of the Social Sciences Network, and has presented public lectures such as an introduction to public choice theory.
