Richard S. Zubarik, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine, University of Vermont, serving as Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Vermont Medical Center. With more than 25 years of service in the University of Vermont Health Network, he has introduced advanced endoscopic technologies, including endoscopic ultrasound, laser lithotripsy for bile duct stones, and endohepatology. His clinical expertise spans general endoscopy, therapeutic endoscopy such as endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, pancreaticobiliary disorders, GI oncology, pancreatitis, dysphagia, and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Zubarik earned his MD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine in 1992 and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from New York University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center in 1995, serving as Chief Resident in 1996. His fellowships include Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Georgetown University Hospital in 1998, Therapeutic Endoscopy at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis, Advanced Therapeutics and Outcomes Research in Gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee in 1999, and Endoscopic Ultrasound at Georgetown University in 1999. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
Dr. Zubarik's academic interests focus on diseases of the intestinal tract, the pancreas, and the biliary tree. He is an innovator in the treatment of esophageal strictures and leads ongoing protocols evaluating pancreas cancer screening, treatment of esophageal strictures, improving management of bile duct stones and malignant biliary obstruction, and treating peptic ulcer disease. As Division Chief, he contributes to a unit with diverse research interests, devotion to teaching, and clinical service to the community. His scholarly work includes key publications such as "Screening for pancreatic cancer in a high-risk population with serum CA 19-9 and targeted EUS: a feasibility study" (2011), "Venous thromboembolism in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma: Disease burden and initiation of ambulatory thromboprophylaxis" (2024), "A standardized protocol improves testing rates for Helicobacter pylori among inpatients with peptic ulcer disease" (2021), and "An Accurate and Automated Method for Adenoma Detection Rate and Report Card Generation Utilizing Common Electronic Health Records" (2023).
