Richard H. Price is an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Utah, where he served on the faculty from 1971 to 2004. He specializes in relativistic astrophysics, with primary research interests in general relativity, black holes, gravitational theory, and applied mathematics. Price earned dual degrees in physics and engineering from Cornell University in 1965 and a Ph.D. in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1971 under the supervision of Kip S. Thorne. During his tenure at the University of Utah, he contributed to programs such as the Physics of Modern Technology (PMT) initiative and was involved in the Utah Relativity Group.
Price held faculty positions at Louisiana State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Brownsville, University of Texas at San Antonio, and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He currently serves as an adjunct professor and research affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He supervised twelve graduate theses and thirty-six postdoctoral fellows. His key publications include the books 'Problem Book in Relativity and Gravitation' (1975, with Alan P. Lightman, William H. Press, and Saul A. Teukolsky), 'Black Holes: The Membrane Paradigm' (1986, with Kip S. Thorne and Douglas A. Macdonald), and 'The Future of Spacetime' (2002, with Stephen W. Hawking and others). He authored numerous papers in Physical Review Letters and the Astrophysical Journal, and over twenty articles in the American Journal of Physics. Price served two terms as Division Associate Editor for Physical Review Letters and became Editor of the American Journal of Physics in 2017. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
