Richard Hewitt has been a dedicated staff member at Salmond College, a residential college affiliated with the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, since 2004. Serving as Deputy Head Academic and Programmes, he oversees academic support initiatives, resident events, and participation in inter-college competitions. His efforts, alongside those of Deputy Head Pastoral and Wellbeing Rachael Carson, led Salmond College to its best-ever performance in the 2024 Intercollege Competition, achieving first place in cultural activities, second place in sports, and second place in games. The college also maintained its Unipol award for the least number of defaults, reflecting the high level of resident engagement and responsibility promoted under his influence. The Collegiate Accommodation and Learning Services (CACLS) Annual Report 2024 recognizes Hewitt's role in inspiring residents to participate actively in college life.
In 2026, Richard Hewitt will transition to the Night Manager position at Salmond College, continuing to support the operational and pastoral needs of residents during evening and night hours. Salmond College provides a supportive environment for female University of Otago students, featuring leadership from Head of College Nick Bates, a comprehensive staff team, student residential leaders (Kaiāwhina Whare), food services, and property maintenance to facilitate academic success and personal development. Hewitt balances his professional commitments with personal interests, including a deep appreciation for rock music from the 1970s and 1980s, tramping, and travelling.
