Professor Richard Gale is Professor of Ophthalmology in the Medicine faculty at Hull York Medical School, University of York. He earned a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Pathology from the University of Leeds in 1994, MBChB in 1997, MEd in Clinical Education in 2008 from the same university, and a PhD in Psychology from the University of York in 2015. He also holds FRCP and FRCOphth fellowships. Following specialist training in Yorkshire, Cambridge, Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Boston, Massachusetts, USA, he joined York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist in 2008. He served as Clinical Director of Ophthalmology from 2018 to 2022, transitioning to Honorary Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist in 2022. Previously an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Hull York Medical School until 2022 and Honorary Visiting Professor in Health Sciences at the University of York from 2017 to 2022, Gale leads the Ophthalmology Research Unit and supervises PhD and MD students.
Gale's research specializations include medical diseases of the retina, particularly age-related macular degeneration, biomarkers, screening, artificial intelligence applications, clinical trials, and ocular and visual pathways imaging. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, with more than 5,200 citations, including 'Improved Structure and Function in Early-Detected Second Eyes With Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration' (2024, Ophthalmology Retina), 'Impact of treat and extend criteria on proportions that can be extended in neovascular age-related macular degeneration' (2024), and 'Real-world service costs for neovascular-AMD clinics in the United Kingdom' (2024, Current Medical Research and Opinion). As chief or principal investigator in approximately 30 studies, he has secured substantial grant funding and translates research into clinical practice. His career appointments include President of the Medical Ophthalmology Society UK (2019-2022), Deputy Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Medical Ophthalmology at the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board, Deputy Chair of the national ARCP panel, and Joint Ophthalmology Specialty Lead for Yorkshire and Humberside Local Research Network. Notable awards encompass the NIHR RCOphth Researcher of the Year (commercial, 2016), Macular Society Best Clinical Service (2013), PJ Hey Medal for services to ophthalmology (2018), and European Vision and Eye Research Congress Poster Prize (2006).
