Radomir Ray Mitic is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at the College of William and Mary School of Education, joining the faculty in 2024. A first-generation college student and child of immigrants originally from Chicago, he earned a Ph.D. in Higher & Postsecondary Education from New York University, a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research Methodology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an M.S. in Education & Social Policy from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in History, International Studies, and Spanish from Loyola University Chicago. Prior to William & Mary, Mitic spent three years at the University of North Dakota. He teaches in the master's and doctoral programs, including courses on History of Higher Education, Educational Planning, Higher Education Law, and Financing Higher Education.
Mitic's research program centers on equitable outcomes of higher education at the local, national, and international levels, with interests in equity in graduate education, student outcomes, civic engagement, first-generation college students, international/comparative higher education, and quantitative research methods. His publications include "The role of family cultural capital to predict study abroad participation in first-generation U.S. undergraduates" (Journal of First-Generation Student Success, 2024), "Socializing future community college faculty: Doctoral professional development and career preparation" (Community College Journal of Research and Practice, 2023), "Developing civic consciousness in Russian higher education: An institutional case study" (Higher Education, 2023), "Examining the associations between financial conditions and study abroad in diverse, low-income college students" (Journal of Student Financial Aid, 2022), "Don’t count them out: Ph.D. skills development and careers in industry" (Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education, 2021), "Diverse pathways to graduate education attainment" (Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, 2020), and "Global learning for local serving: Establishing the links between study abroad and post-college volunteering" (Research in Higher Education, 2020). Current projects feature an Arthur Vining Davis Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship titled "Examining the Impact of Public Liberal Arts Education on Cultivating Civic and Democratic Citizenship: Causes and Results" and an Inclusive Graduate Education Network project "Ad Astra Diversitas: Advancing Full Participation in Space Science." Awards include the AVDF/ACLS Fellowship (2024), University of North Dakota Foundation/McDermott Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate or Professional Teaching (2024), University of North Dakota Early Career Scholars Program grant (2023), IGEN Research Accelerator Grant (2021), and Higher School of Economics Semyonov Award (2019). He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of First-Generation Student Success, editorial board member for the Journal of College Student Development, and is active in the Association for the Study of Higher Education, American Educational Research Association, and Comparative & International Education Society.
