About Ralph

Professor Ralph Nanan serves as Chair and Professor of Paediatrics at Sydney Medical School Nepean within the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. Holding qualifications of DrMed Habil from Germany and FRACP, he was appointed to this position in 2005 and has since established a prominent paediatric immunology research group at Nepean Clinical School. In addition to his academic role, he leads the Charles Perkins Centre Nepean, focusing on the developmental origins of health and disease. Nanan also holds positions as Sub-Dean of Research in the Discipline of Paediatrics and Clinical Director for Women and Children's Health at Nepean Hospital. His career emphasizes bridging clinical paediatrics with cutting-edge immunological research.

Professor Nanan's research centers on paediatric clinical immunology, with a specific emphasis on regulatory T cells and immune tolerance mechanisms in pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. His investigations explore how maternal diet, gut microbiota, and environmental factors influence offspring outcomes, including allergic diseases, asthma, ADHD, epilepsy, and food allergies. Notable contributions include studies demonstrating that breastfeeding enhances intestinal microbiota maturation and reduces cow’s milk allergy risk at 12 months (BMC Medicine, 2024), decreased maternal serum acetate linked to impaired fetal development in preeclampsia (Nature Communications, 2019), and predictive biomarkers for sustained unresponsiveness after oral immunotherapy (Clinical & Experimental Allergy, 2026). Other key publications cover gut microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles regulating hepatic gluconeogenesis (Molecular Metabolism, 2025), effects of butyrylated high amylose maize starch as an adjuvant for oral immunotherapy (Allergy, 2025), and ancestry-associated immune signaling in atopic dermatitis (Allergy, 2026). With over 6,500 citations across 187 publications, his work has significant impact, informing dietary interventions to mitigate preeclampsia risk and linking gut bacteria to diabetes prevention. Nanan received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 2014 and contributes to planetary health initiatives as a Senior Fellow in Immunoregulation at inVIVO. His research outputs underscore the interplay between early-life immune programming and long-term health trajectories.
