Dr. Ragan Borzcik serves in Agricultural and Veterinary Science at Portland Community College as the Faculty Department Chair and Program Director of the Veterinary Technology Program. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Joining Portland Community College as a full-time faculty member, her addition significantly improved the delivery of large animal-related medical care within the program. In 2017, she received continuous appointment as Instructor in Veterinary Technology. Under her leadership, the program—one of only two Veterinary Technology programs in Oregon and five in the Pacific Northwest—provides associate degrees with hands-on training for veterinary technicians who assist licensed veterinarians in animal nursing care across clinics, wildlife preserves, zoos, shelters, and laboratories. Graduates benefit from robust job placement, with four to five positions available per student, addressing a projected 23.1% employment growth through 2029 according to the Oregon Employment Department.
Dr. Borzcik has spearheaded key enhancements to program facilities, including the opening of a new 10,000-square-foot barn at the Rock Creek Campus in May 2024. This state-of-the-art facility features recessed flooring, advanced water feeders, internet connectivity, internal cameras, and a classroom with an ultrasound machine, supporting livestock such as cattle, sheep, horses, dogs, and cats while improving teaching conditions free from previous issues like poor lighting and weather exposure. The Veterinary Technology Program has achieved a 90% pass rate on the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) over the previous three years, surpassing the national average by 21 percentage points. She received a Perkins-funded conference grant in 2019 to attend the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators Conference. Dr. Borzcik serves on the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board and participates in college committees including Degrees & Certificates and Curriculum/Gen Ed. Her efforts emphasize practical experience essential for student career preparation in veterinary technology.
