Rachel Watts is an Academic Teacher in the Curtin College Pathways section at Curtin University. She works within the Global Future Students area of the Global Curtin portfolio, based at the Curtin Perth campus in Building 205, the Mechanical Engineering building.
Her academic background includes a Master of Media and Communication specializing in Creative Writing, obtained from Curtin University between July 2015 and June 2017. She is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Writing in the School of Humanities at Curtin University, with her research focusing on narrative complexity in ecological and climate change fiction. As a writer, Rachel Watts produces literary and speculative fiction, as well as short creative non-fiction. Her creative works have been published in prominent Australian literary magazines, including Westerly, Island, and Kill Your Darlings. In the academic realm, she has published the article "'Every woman adores a fascist': Feminist literary intervention in elegiac writing" in the TEXT journal in 2019. Prior to her role at Curtin, she had a career in journalism, where she was recognized with an award for her series "Out of Mind: Uncovering Mental Illness" produced by the Community Newspaper Group WA at the 2005 TheMHS Awards. She has also contributed to literary editing as a member of the editorial board for prose pieces in SWAMP journal.
