Professor Pratima Chowdary is Professor of Haemophilia and Haemostasis at University College London and Centre Director of the Katharine Dormandy Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre at the Royal Free Hospital, part of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. She holds qualifications including MBBS, MD, MRCP, and FRCPath, having completed her medical training at Osmania University and NTR Health University in India, followed by subspecialty training in haematology in Cardiff and London. With over 15 years as a consultant haematologist, she specialises in the management of patients with inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders, including thrombotic disorders, inherited bleeding disorders, anticoagulation, thrombosis in pregnancy, and miscarriages. She serves as clinical service lead for haemophilia, rheumatology, and haematology, and is chair of the UK Haemophilia Centre Doctors' Organisation (UKHCDO) as well as co-director of the UK National Haemophilia Database.
Professor Chowdary's research focuses on developing strategies to improve personalised management of haemophilia and clinical outcomes. She has overseen the development of a biobank at the Royal Free Hospital and maintains special interests in biomarkers for joint disease and novel assays for bleeding diathesis and thrombotic tendency. As chief investigator for numerous academic and commercial clinical trials, including gene therapy and other novel treatments for severe haemophilia, she has contributed significantly to advancing haemophilia care. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and three textbook chapters, including recent works such as 'Haemophilia' in The Lancet (2025), 'Concizumab prophylaxis in people with haemophilia A or haemophilia B without inhibitors (explorer8)' in The Lancet Haematology (2024), 'UKHCDO gene therapy taskforce: Guidance for implementation of haemophilia gene therapy into routine clinical practice for adults' in Haemophilia (2025), and 'Bioengineered Factor VIII - More Innovation for Hemophilia A' in the New England Journal of Medicine (2024). She has chaired working parties, data safety monitoring boards, and trial steering committees, and served as a panel member for the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment Program in the UK and Norway. Professor Chowdary is a member of professional societies including the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis, European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders, and World Federation of Haemophilia.
