Kulkarni's research specializes in digital health and data governance, with interests in human-computer interaction and participatory research. He investigates methods to engage individuals directly in decisions about the collection, access, and use of their data, collaborating with communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers to foster transparency, accountability, and inclusive data practices. His work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Key publications include "Designing Culturally Adapted Digital Mental Health Support Tool for Chinese-Speaking International Students in Australia: A Qualitative Co-design Study" (2025, co-authored with Wu, Zhu, Seguin, Xie, Li, and Olivier); "Designing for Participatory Data Governance: Insights from People with Parkinson’s" (2024, with Kirkham, Wu, and McNaney); "Shadow Program Committee: Designing for Diversity and Equity within Academic Communities" (2024, with Varghese, Mthoko, Watterson, Richardson, Lazem, and Olivier); "Exploring the digital support needs of caregivers of people with serious mental illness" (2023, with Siddiqui, Varghese, Singh, Bayyavarapu, Lindsay, Chandrasekara, Wu, Alshehri, and Olivier); "Exploring perceptions of cross-sectoral data sharing with people with Parkinson's" (2022, with McNaney, Morgan, Vega, Heidarivincheh, McConville, Whone, Kim, Kirkham, and Craddock); and his PhD thesis "Designing for Participatory Data Governance" (2025). These contributions advance participatory approaches in e-health and data ethics.
