Prabanga Thoradeniya is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting at Monash Business School, Monash University. She joined the department in July 2005, following her tenure at the Australian National University. Earlier in her career, Thoradeniya worked overseas as an accountant in industry and as a lecturer in Accounting at the University of Colombo. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University, completed in 2011, with a thesis examining the factors influencing corporate sustainability reporting in Sri Lanka. Her academic interests center on sustainability management accounting, environmental accounting, social accounting, and broader sustainability accounting practices.
Thoradeniya's research has significantly contributed to understanding sustainability reporting and accounting in diverse contexts, including developing countries and public sectors. Key publications include "Sustainability reporting and the theory of planned behaviour" (2015, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, co-authored with Janet Lee, Rebecca Tan, and Aldonio Ferreira), which has garnered 242 citations; "From intention to action on sustainability reporting: the role of individual, organisational and institutional factors during war and post-war periods" (2022, The British Accounting Review); "The diffusion of sustainability key performance indicators in a developing country context" (2021, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal); "Tax avoidance and stock price crash risk: mitigating role of managerial ability" (2022, International Journal of Managerial Finance); and "Blending logics with performance management systems in an NGO setting" (2025, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal). She has also contributed chapters such as "Adapting a national pandemic control model as a surveillance-control mechanism to facilitate corporate sustainability and integrated reporting" in Integrated Reporting (IR) for Sustainability (2023). Thoradeniya has secured research funding, including from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and AFAANZ, for projects on sustainability performance measures and managerial incentives. Her excellence in teaching is recognized through awards such as the Department of Accounting Innovation in Teaching and Learning Award (2021, for ACC3200 and ACF3200), Blue Unit Letter for Teaching Excellence (2020, ACF2200), Advancing Women's Research Success Grant (2016), and Department of Accounting Seed Funding Scheme (2016).
