Pierre Fayad, MD, is a Professor of Vascular Neurology in the Department of Neurological Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Università Degli Studi Di Roma-La Sapienza in Rome, Italy, in 1983, followed by a urology residency at the same institution from 1983 to 1984. He completed his neurology residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Dent Neurologic Institute from 1986 to 1989, and a fellowship in vascular neurology and stroke at Yale University School of Medicine from 1989 to 1991. Joining the Yale faculty in 1991 as an instructor, he advanced to assistant professor in 1992 and associate professor in 1997, serving as director of the Yale Vascular Neurology Program and co-director of the Yale Cerebrovascular Center. In 2001, Dr. Fayad joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center as chairman of the Department of Neurological Sciences, a role he held until the end of 2010, during which he was appointed Reynolds Centennial Professor.
Currently, Dr. Fayad serves as Chief of the Vascular Division, Director of the Vascular Neurology and Stroke Program, Program Director of the Nebraska Stroke Center, and Joint Residency Program Director with Creighton University. He also directs the stroke center at Nebraska Medicine, leading a multidisciplinary Stroke Code Team and overseeing an outpatient neurological clinic. His research specializes in vascular neurology and stroke, with participation in NIH-funded clinical trials on acute stroke treatment and prevention. He has authored over 50 articles and book chapters, including contributions to the CREST trial published as "Long-Term Results of Carotid Stenting versus Endarterectomy" in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2008, and more recent work on mobile stroke units in 2020. Dr. Fayad received the American Heart Association Physician of the Year award in 2009, holds fellowships as FAHA and FAAN, and has chaired committees for the American Stroke Association, including its Advisory Committee. Under his leadership, the stroke center achieved Joint Commission certification as Nebraska's first Primary Stroke Center and sustained American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Achievement Awards.
