Dr. Phillip Newton is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at the Central Coast Clinical School within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He also serves as Deputy Head of School (Research) and Head of Discipline - Nursing. Newton holds a Doctor of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) from the University of Western Sydney. An internationally recognised heart failure nurse researcher, his career trajectory includes Professor at Western Sydney University (2017-2019), Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Director of Research Students at the University of Technology Sydney (2013-2017). After a three-year break from academia (2019-2022), he recommenced at the University of Newcastle in September 2022. His research specializations encompass cardiovascular disease, heart failure, frailty, and nursing, with fields of research comprising 75% cardiology (including cardiovascular diseases) and 25% nursing. He led the NSW Heart Failure Snapshot, the largest prospective point-prevalence study of acute heart failure management and outcomes in Australia. His team was the first to demonstrate frailty's independent impact on heart transplant referrals, its reversibility in select patients, and validation of frailty measures across heart failure contexts. This work is cited in the latest Australian heart failure guidelines and international consensus papers. Newton has supervised 32 students to completion (22 PhDs, 10 Honours), with alumni securing academic posts in Hong Kong, Lebanon, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.
Newton has earned fellowships from the Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand (FCSANZ, 2016), European Society of Cardiology (FESC, 2016), and American Heart Association (FAHA, 2013). Leadership roles include President of the Australasian Cardiovascular Nursing Council (2019-2021), Chair of the Heart Failure Council of the Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand (2016-2019), two terms on the CSANZ Cardiovascular Nursing Council (2012-2018), and membership on the 2018 National Heart Foundation of Australia and CSANZ Heart Failure Guidelines Working Group. He co-convened the 2015 ACNC Annual Scientific Meeting, served on the 2015 Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Network Showcase organising committee, chaired the inaugural UTS clinical trials ethics committee, and sat on faculty and university research committees and the Graduate Research School Board at UTS and WSU.
