About Phil

Professor Phil Hancock is Professor of Accounting and Director of Student Experience in the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and a Master of Commerce by thesis from the University of Western Australia. His career began as an Audit Clerk at Irish, Young and Outhwaite from 1968 to 1969, followed by Tutor at UWA from 1973 to 1974 and Lecturer from 1975 to 1983, during which he served as Sub-Dean of Commerce for three years. Subsequent roles included Senior Lecturer at the Western Australian College of Advanced Education (now Edith Cowan University) from 1983 to 1985 and 1990, Acting Principal Lecturer and Associate Head of School of Business from 1986 to 1988, and Director at the International Centre for Management Studies from 1988 to 1989. From 1990 to 2001, he was Senior Lecturer and then Associate Professor of Accounting at Murdoch University. Hancock joined the UWA Business School in January 2002, later holding positions such as Chair of the UWA Business School from 2013 to 2015 and Chair of the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education from 2017 to 2020. He also served as Director and Chairman of the University Credit Union for 10 years.

Hancock's research specializations encompass accounting education, the teaching and research nexus, financial reporting, not-for-profits financial reporting issues, corporate governance, and financial accounting regulation, issues and standard setting. He has authored more than 40 articles in leading accounting journals, book chapters, and conference papers. Key publications include The British Accounting Review: Special Issue New challenges in governance, sustainability and accountability of universities (2026), Threshold Concepts in the Preparation of Consolidated Financial Statements (2026), AASB Research Centre Working Paper No. 26-03: Service Performance Reporting - Insights from Domestic and International Experience (2025), AASB Working Paper No. 26-01: Connectivity of Non-Financial Information and Financial Information - A NFP Private Sector Study (2025), and Students’ perceptions of different assessment modes and student experience (2025). His contributions to teaching have earned awards such as the UWA Excellence in Teaching Award for Postgraduate Coursework (2003), National Carrick Institute citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2006), AFAANZ award for outstanding contribution to accounting and finance education (2013), CPA Australia WA Division President’s Award for Excellence in Academia (2020), AFAANZ Outstanding Contribution to Accounting Practice (2023), and AFAANZ ECR Accounting Education Award (2023, shared). A Fellow of CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, he has been Editor of the Journal of Accounting Education since 2011 and President of the Western Australian Division of CPA in 2017. He presented the public lecture Regulation of financial reporting in Australia in 2018.
