About Peter

Professor Peter Kam, MBBS MD (Malaya), FRCA, FANZCA, FFARCSI, FHKCA (Hon), serves as Professor Emeritus and Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetics in the Discipline of Anaesthesia, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Sydney. Throughout his career, he has held key leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Anaesthetics at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and has made enduring contributions to anaesthesiology through research, education, and clinical practice. His academic journey reflects a commitment to advancing physiological understanding and perioperative care, with appointments documented in University of Sydney records since at least 2007.

Kam's research interests center on anaesthetics, particularly the pharmacokinetics of local anaesthetics in peripheral nerve blocks, perioperative implications of novel pharmacological agents, and physiological principles for anaesthetists. He has published extensively on topics such as preoperative glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and postoperative respiratory complications (JAMA, 2024), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in peri-operative practice (Anaesthesia, 2024), intraoperative oliguria and acute kidney injury (2022 meta-analysis), anaesthesia guidelines for COVID-19 patients (2020), neuroimmune mechanisms of pain (2020), prehabilitation for frail surgical patients (2018), and sodium-glucose co-transporter type-2 inhibitors (2018). A cornerstone of his scholarly output is the textbook Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, co-authored with Ian Power, with the fourth edition released in 2020. This resource elucidates key physiological concepts for anaesthesia practice. His work has garnered over 8,784 citations and 144,218 reads on ResearchGate, underscoring his influence in perioperative medicine. Kam has received prestigious honors, including the Orton Medal from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and Honorary Fellowship from the Hong Kong College of Anaesthetists.
