Professor Peter Bye is a Clinical Professor in the Central Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Sydney. He is also a Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). His medical training included internship, residency, and general medicine registrar positions at RPAH, a secondment to Papua New Guinea for eight months, and specialist training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at RPAH and Concord Hospital. He completed a PhD at the University of Sydney and RPAH titled “Studies of Exercise and Sleep in Interstitial Lung Disease.” Following this, he undertook two years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Meakins–Christie Laboratories, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, Canada, and six months of research and clinical work at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK. Upon returning, he joined the staff of the RPAH Department of Respiratory Medicine.
Throughout his career, Professor Bye directed the Cystic Fibrosis Service at RPAH from 1986 to 2012, served as Deputy Head of the Respiratory Medicine Department from 1990 to 2010, and led the Cystic Fibrosis Research Group at the Woolcock Institute from 2000 to 2011. His research specializations include cystic fibrosis, with landmark work demonstrating the benefits of hypertonic saline in enhancing mucus clearance, lung function, quality of life, and reducing exacerbations in cystic fibrosis patients, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006; this treatment is now standard internationally. Additional contributions encompass exercise physiology in interstitial lung disease, respiratory muscle fatigue, sleep-disordered breathing in cystic fibrosis, pulmonary exacerbations' impact on neurocognitive function, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection control. He has authored 125 peer-reviewed publications, supervised multiple PhD students to completion, and secured 50 peer-reviewed grants totaling five million dollars, including 12 NHMRC Project Grants. Notable honors include the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019 for service to medicine and cystic fibrosis research, the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand Research Medal in 2009, and the RPAH Foundation Research Medal in 2005. He has served on editorial boards, such as the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis, and held leadership roles in cystic fibrosis organizations, including chairing the TSANZ Special Interest Group in Cystic Fibrosis and representing Australia at international conferences.
