Dr Paul Manuel serves as Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care within the University of Otago's Faculty of Medicine. He is a Consultant General Surgeon at Southland Hospital in Invercargill, with extensive expertise in general surgery, rural general surgery, trauma, acute care and emergency general surgery, colorectal surgery, hernia surgery, surgical endoscopy, and surgical critical care. Manuel completed his BSc (Hons) and MD at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, where he also undertook his general surgery training. He further holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (PGDipPH) from the University of Liverpool and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) since 2009. His professional experience encompasses training and practice across rural and urban centres in both Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand, reflecting his commitment to general surgery in rural settings.
Manuel's academic interests focus on trauma, acute care and emergency general surgery, colorectal surgery, hernia surgery, surgical endoscopy, and surgical critical care. He co-authored the article 'Vernix caseosa peritonitis: A novel case with colonic perforation' published in the New Zealand Medical Journal in 2023 (Hart et al., 136(1575), 72-75). As Coordinator for University of Otago fourth-year medical students, he plays a key role in surgical education at Southland Hospital. His dedication to teaching has been recognized with the University of Otago's Consultant Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2024 for the Invercargill campus and the Senior Medical Officer Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2021. Manuel holds memberships in the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons, and the Rural Surgery Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, contributing to professional development in general and rural surgery.
