De Cates also holds the position of External Examiner at Keele University School of Medicine.

Paul de Cates' research fields include curriculum and pedagogy, education systems, and specialist studies in education. His contributions to medical education scholarship are evidenced by publications in Medical Teacher. In 2018, he co-authored 'Warwick Medical School: A four dimensional curriculum' with Katherine Owen and Colin Francis Macdougall, presenting the integrated curriculum model at Warwick featuring clinical, professional, interprofessional, and enquiry-based dimensions shaped by student input. In 2019, alongside Angharad N de Cates, Swaran P Singh, and Steven Marwaha, he published 'Can curriculum design influence medical students' attitudes to psychiatry? A comparison of two different approaches,' analyzing survey data from UK medical schools on how curriculum structures impact student attitudes toward psychiatry. He completed his Masters in Medical Education at Warwick Medical School. These works underscore his influence on advancing innovative pedagogical practices in undergraduate medical training.
