Inspires students to love learning.
Patrice Leverett is an assistant professor of school psychology in the Department of Counselor Education, School Psychology, and Human Services within the University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Education. Possessing over 15 years of experience as an educator and school psychologist, her scholarship centers on the effectiveness of implicit bias interventions in reducing biased student discipline outcomes, the influence of school and community partnerships on student mental health, and strategies to advance anti-racism initiatives in school psychology training and practice. A Nationally Certified School Psychologist, she chairs the College of Education Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee and mentors emerging scholars through the Holmes Scholars Program, including presentations on culturally responsive research agendas with minority communities. Leverett actively engages in public discourse, delivering lectures on addressing the school-to-prison pipeline and contributing to Nevada's Summit on Nevada Education.
Leverett's collaboration with the Clark County School District represents one of the largest-scale implicit bias training initiatives in schools, equipping over 4,000 teachers and administrators with tools to recognize and mitigate racial bias in discipline, where African American students, 15 percent of enrollment, account for nearly 45 percent of suspensions and expulsions. This work garnered her the 2021 Community-Based Research Award from UNLV's Office of Community Engagement. Further accolades include the 2022 Anti-Racism Action Grant from APA Division 16 to support participant action research on decolonial practices in school psychology, and selection as a 2022 Early-Career Scholar by the Society for the Study of School Psychology. Her peer-reviewed publications encompass 'Decolonizing School Psychology Research: A Systematic Literature Review' (Journal of Social Issues, 2022), 'The Effect of Program Mission on Students: Developing a Program Assessment System for Social Justice Training' with Samuel Song (Journal of School Psychology Training and Pedagogy, 2021), and 'Educational Equity Perspectives in Response to the Black Lives Matter Movement: A Road Map for Nevada' (Policy Issues in Nevada Education, 2021). These efforts underscore her impact on fostering equitable educational environments and informing policy for diverse student populations.
