Prof. Dr. Pamela Wicker is Professor for Sport Management and Sport Sociology at Universität Bielefeld in the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science. As head of the Chair III - Sport and Society within the Department of Sports Science, her research explores social science dimensions of sport, including sport organizations and non-profit sports clubs, sport participation and subjective well-being, gender diversity and equity in sport leadership and volunteering, environmental sustainability such as carbon footprints of sport participants and sustainable practices in sport events, and social capital from voluntary sport clubs. With over 400 peer-reviewed publications and more than 8,600 citations, her work significantly influences sport management and sociology.
Wicker earned her PhD in 2009 and habilitation in 2015 from the German Sport University Cologne. Her professional trajectory includes serving as Akademische Rätin at the Institute for Sport Economics and Sport Management at the German Sport University Cologne from 2016 to 2019, Senior Lecturer in Sport Management at Griffith University, Australia, from 2011 to 2012, Acting Professor for Sports Organizations at Bielefeld University from September 2019 to July 2020, and her current position since July 2020. She received and declined calls for positions at Loughborough University, University of Vienna, and University of Innsbruck. Key publications encompass "Scarcity of resources in German non-profit sport clubs" (2011, Sport Management Review), "Understanding the importance of organizational resources to explain organizational problems: Evidence from nonprofit sport clubs in Germany" (2013, VOLUNTAS: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations), "Sport participation and subjective well-being: Instrumental variable results from German survey data" (2014, Journal of Physical Activity and Health), "Volunteerism and volunteer management in sport" (2017, Sport Management Review), and "The carbon footprint of active sport participants" (2019, Sport Management Review). She holds leadership roles as President of the European Sport Economics Association, associate editor for European Sport Management Quarterly, Sport Management Review, European Journal for Sport and Society, and Journal for Study and Teaching in Sport Sciences, and serves on editorial boards of Journal of Sport Management, Journal of Sports Economics, and others. Awards include the SMAANZ Research Fellow and EASM Best Conference Reviewer Award.
