Pamela Z. Sears, known professionally as Pam Sears, serves as Professor of Theatre and Chair of the Department of Communication Arts in the College of Arts and Humanities at Georgia Southern University. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia in 1998 and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina in 1992. Maintaining offices at both the Statesboro Campus in Sanford Hall 3014 and the Armstrong Campus in Jenkins Hall 104, Sears leads a dynamic department that encompasses theatre programs in acting, movement, directing, design, stage management, and technical production, alongside multimedia, film production, public relations, and communication studies. Sears specializes in acting and movement, with research focused on theatre for social change. As a facilitator and mentor in the classroom, she introduces students to new research and techniques, promotes group discussions, and cultivates intrinsic motivation. Professionally, she works as a director, choreographer, and actor, with credits at Atlanta’s Theatre in the Square, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, and Highlands Playhouse, as well as television and film appearances. She has participated in Association for Theatre in Higher Education New Play Development workshops in Las Vegas, Washington DC, Chicago, and Austin. At Georgia Southern, Sears has directed key productions including the musical 'The Addams Family' in 2019, 'Every 28 Hours Plays' inspired by the 2014 Ferguson riots, a trailer park musical in 2019, and innovative pandemic-era theatre streamed via Zoom and Vimeo. Previously serving as Interim Chair, she contributes to university governance through the Faculty Senate and as Georgia Southern’s representative on the University System of Georgia Academic Advisory Committee for Communication. Her leadership supports hands-on student training in full production processes, fostering well-rounded theatre professionals.
